Six steps

  1. Use a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser without alcohol. Compare options in best gentle face cleansers.
  2. Wet your face with lukewarm water and apply cleanser with your fingertips.
  3. Do not scrub.
  4. Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry with a soft towel.
  5. Moisturize if skin is dry or itchy. See best moisturizers for dry skin.
  6. Wash twice a day and after heavy sweating.

In the morning, finish with sunscreen. See how to apply sunscreen.

Why each step matters

The AAD’s face-washing advice centers on avoiding irritation:

  • Fingertips only. The AAD says a washcloth, mesh sponge or anything other than your fingertips can irritate skin.
  • Lukewarm water. Use it to wet your face and to rinse.
  • No scrubbing. Scrubbing irritates skin, so resist the urge even when your face feels oily.
  • Pat, don’t rub. Use a soft towel.
  • Be gentle around the eyes. When applying cream there, do not pull on the thin skin.
  • After sweat, wash soon. Sweat irritates skin, the AAD says, especially under a hat or helmet. Wash as soon as you can after heavy sweating.

Choosing a cleanser

Face washing 101 asks only for a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser without alcohol. The AAD’s dry-skin guide adds some details that apply to faces too:

AAD pointWhat it means for a face cleanser
Choose “fragrance-free”“Unscented” products may contain masking chemicals that can irritate
Avoid harsh soapsDeodorant soaps are too harsh for dry, sensitive skin
Skip alcohol and fragrance while skin is dryCheck the ingredient list, not only the front label
Use only enough to remove dirt and oilA thick lather is not a sign of a better wash

Morning and night

TimeAAD-based routine
MorningWash, pat dry, moisturize if dry, then sunscreen
NightWash, pat dry, moisturize if dry or itchy
After heavy sweatingWash as soon as possible

For the morning sunscreen, the AAD says to use at least 1 teaspoon on the face, about enough to cover the length of your index and middle fingers. It suggests SPF 30 or higher, broad spectrum and water resistant, applied about 15 minutes before going outside.

When to get help

If you have questions or concerns about your skin, the AAD suggests seeing a board-certified dermatologist.
